Modern Warfare 4's October 28 patch is the game's first broad weapon tuning pass. It adjusts hit-location damage, buffs several SMGs, temporarily reduces dive velocity, and fixes progression and DMZ issues.
The October 28 update is MW4's first broad weapon tuning pass
Infinity Ward's October 28, 2026 update is the first broad weapon tuning pass for Modern Warfare 4. The official notes say the team focused on more consistent hit-location damage and general SMG improvements, while also addressing Challenges, Killstreaks, the Quick Fix Perk, and other gameplay issues. DMZ receives exploit closures and fixes involving Loadouts and Exfil.
This patch is distinct from the earlier launch fixes. It changes how several weapons behave and makes a short-term movement adjustment in response to a speed exploit. That means returning players may notice their usual gunfights feel a little different, especially if they rely on SMGs or take advantage of aggressive diving movement.
The patch notes list exact weapon values and affected systems, but they do not declare a new best loadout. A number change can alter a weapon's feel without making it the strongest option in every map or mode. The best approach is to test a familiar setup in a few matches and compare how it performs at the ranges you actually fight.
Assault rifle adjustments focus on range and damage multipliers
Several assault rifles received changes to damage range or hit multipliers. The Han 86's maximum damage range increased from 1,120 to 1,200, while its neck and upper-torso multipliers moved down from 1.1 to 1.0. The Kastov 762's maximum damage range went from 950 to 1,050, and the M4's increased from 990 to 1,020.
The Oden also received changes to neck, torso, and attachment ranges. Its base neck and upper torso multipliers were reduced from 1.2 to 1.1, and its lower torso multiplier moved from 1.1 to 1.0. The Sentinel Apex attachment has shorter maximum and mid damage ranges in the published table. These are specific tuning changes, not a blanket increase or decrease to every rifle.
For players, range adjustments usually matter most when a weapon sits near a damage breakpoint. A small extension can make a gun more dependable at a common engagement distance, while a lower hit multiplier can change how rewarding precise upper-body shots feel. Try the rifle in the same mode and map you normally play, and avoid judging it from one close-range encounter.
SMGs get more consistent arm and hand damage values
The patch's stated goal includes improving SMG performance, with upper-limb damage multipliers a particular focus. The ISO Nightshade's limb and hand multipliers shown in the notes move from 0.95 to 1.0. Similar values are listed for several weapons, including the PPSh-41 and VEL 46, which should make shots that connect with arms or hands less punishing than before.
The PPSh-41 also gets small movement and aiming changes: ADS-in time drops from 300 to 280 milliseconds, and a few movement values tick upward. The official table shows these are incremental adjustments rather than a complete redesign. The update may make the weapon feel more responsive when aiming and strafing, but attachments and player input still affect the result.
The patch notes describe the intended tuning, not a competitive tier list. A gun can feel more consistent and still be outperformed in a particular lobby by a weapon with better range, recoil, or magazine capacity. If you play close quarters, compare the ISO Nightshade, PPSh-41, and VEL 46 in realistic matches, then choose the one whose handling you can control.
Dive speed is temporarily reduced to limit an exploit
Infinity Ward says it is aware of a movement exploit where a player could dive immediately after a sprint jump to gain a speed boost. As a short-term measure, the update reduces dive velocity by 23%. The studio says it is working on a longer-term fix that will address the exploit without leaving dive velocity impacted, and says it will share more in a future update.
That wording matters. This is described as a mitigation, not the final movement design. Players who use dives to cross exposed ground or break an opponent's aim may feel the difference right away. It is reasonable to adjust your timing, but it is too early to assume that every dive interaction has been permanently changed.
Movement changes can affect muscle memory more than a weapon stat table. Spend a few minutes in a low-pressure mode learning the new distance and timing before relying on the maneuver in ranked or objective play. If a later patch restores some velocity after the exploit is fixed, the behavior could change again, so keep an eye on official notes rather than outdated clips.
DMZ fixes and playlist changes round out the patch
Outside weapon balance, Infinity Ward says it closed DMZ exploits and resolved issues with Loadouts and Exfil. The notes also mention Multiplayer fixes involving challenges, Killstreaks, and Quick Fix. Several interface corrections make camo and Calling Card progress easier to read, and address a case where Prestiging from the DMZ FOB did not correctly reset Multiplayer Loadouts.
The playlist update lists Shipment 24/7, Frontline, Inflation, Collateral, Kill Block: 6v6 Gunfight, and Gun Game. Free For All's score limit was restored to 30 after an earlier adjustment because matches were often timing out. The developers say Final Killcam will be restored in a later backend update, so it should not be assumed to be back with this patch.
If you play DMZ, check your stash and loadout after updating, especially if you previously encountered an Exfil or saved-build problem. If you play Multiplayer, verify your challenges and tracked camos in the menu. These checks are simple, but they help distinguish a fixed issue from a UI display problem that Infinity Ward may still be investigating.
What players should test after installing
Start with one weapon you used often before the patch. Compare it at close, medium, and longer distances rather than swapping your whole loadout at once. If it is an SMG, pay attention to fights where bullets land on arms or hands. If it is one of the listed rifles, check whether the range adjustment changes how comfortable it feels just outside close quarters.
Next, test sprint-jump-dive movement in a safe setting. The official note gives a 23% reduction to dive velocity as the temporary countermeasure, but the exact feel will depend on how you chain movement and what the game mode allows. Update your timing instead of trying to reproduce the exploit, and report any legitimate movement bug through the official channels.
The October 28 MW4 patch is a meaningful early balance pass, with detailed weapon adjustments and a clear acknowledgement that the movement fix is temporary. It is not a final verdict on the game's meta. Watch for follow-up notes, then base your loadout choices on the live build and your own matches rather than recycled pre-patch advice.
